Abstract
The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the main definitions related to the statistics on tourism,
agreed and adopted at international and inter-institutional level. The importance of having well-defined and
shared basic concepts allows to be clear on what is the precise framework of the phenomena to be
analyzed and what topics to be collected by statistical surveys.
Then the Italian official statistical sources to capture the touristic flows are briefly described with a particular
attention on their differences, the forms of tourism covered and the overlaps.
The paper also presents many graphical and figurative representations to better highlight the expressed concepts.
